Down the Road
I'm working on several things for upcoming issues of Casefile Clues, including:
- A followup in the "working with a professional series." We are getting ready to finalize our contract after deciding what to research and why. An earlier column discussed the family, the problem, and what sources I thought would be helpful. It also included a discussion of that the researcher found initially and additional suggestions on what she thought would be helpful in my search. I'm hoping we find something in those Pullman Car Company records.
- A discussion on my work on three bounty land applications from the War of 1812. Apparently two of these men had pensions, all had service records, and there may be more material than that. We'll discuss obtaining these records, which ones I might want to focus on initially and what additional research options there are.
- A followup on good old Ira Sargent. He's my notorious brick wall ancestor and in several earlier issues I discussed a potential breakthrough on his parents. As discussed previously, until I can have some on-site work done in Winnebago County, Illinois, this research is on hold. Over the Christmas holiday, I'm planning a road trip to Rockford (the county seat) in an attempt to locate information on Clark Sargent, the probable father of Ira. One reader who accidentally missed an issue due to an email problem wanted to make certain she received it because she wanted to find out what happened to Ira. I know what happened to him, it's where he's from that is the problem. Now it looks like Ira's parents were actually from somewhere in New York State.
- John Lake married Charlotte Brown in the 1840s in Mercer County, Kentucky. He was married before to another Brown. We'll take a look at Mercer County, Kentucky, marriage bonds in an attempt to make some headway into the family structure. The Lakes are not the problem---it is the Browns!
